FAQ
Everything you need to know about Japanese denim, our services, and shopping at DC4.
What is selvedge denim?
Selvedge (self-edge) denim is woven on traditional shuttle looms, producing a clean, finished edge on the fabric. This weaving method is slower and creates a denser, more durable material. Most of our Japanese denim is woven on vintage shuttle looms, resulting in unique texture and character that mass-produced denim cannot replicate.
Why our jeans are one washed ?
From over 20 years of experience in selling high-quality Japanese denim, we came to the realization that raw denim, while beautiful, can often be a difficult journey for customers. That’s why we’ve chosen to offer a single-wash option, so you can enjoy the perfect fit, comfort and style from day one, without the wait.
You can also use our chain stitch hemming service right away, and we will shorten your new jeans to your desired length.
How do I break in Japanese denim?
The selvedge fabric will feel stiff at first but softens naturally with wear. Most denim enthusiasts wear their jeans for 3–6 months before the first wash to develop personal fade patterns. Our team can guide you through the process and recommend the right approach for your jeans.
What is chain stitching?
Chain stitching is a traditional hemming that creates a subtle roping effect on the hem over time. At DC4 we use a vintage Union Special 43200G sewing machine from the old Levis factory in North Carolina. This is the gold standard for denim hemming. This service is only available for jeans purchased at DC4.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We ship worldwide via DHL, DHL Express and UPS. Orders over €350 within Europe qualify for free shipping. Non-EU customers benefit from tax-free shopping, saving 19% VAT automatically at checkout.
How long will it take to get my order?
Orders within Germany typically arrive within 1–3 business days. European deliveries take 3–5 business days, and international shipments usually arrive within 5–10 business days depending on the destination.
What is your return policy?
We accept returns within 14 days of delivery. Items must be unworn, unwashed, and in their original condition with all tags attached. Please note that hemmed or altered jeans cannot be returned.
How can I pay?
We accept PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. All transactions are processed securely through our online store.
Do you hem jeans?
Yes, we offer our in-house chain stitch hemming service for all jeans bought at DC4 with the vintage Union Special 43200G machine. This is the original sewing machine used to apply a genuine chain stitch hem to your jeans.
This rare model also called "BLACK HEAD" or "BLACK BEAUTY" because of the color of the machine. The first model was made in the 1930’s. Our sewing machine had been used in the old Levi Strauss factory in North Carolina until the 1950’s.
The hem chain stitched on this UNION SPECIAL machine will develop a unique "ROPING" effect after washing or soaking the jeans.
We use the original yarn for each jeans, supplied from our
Japanese denim manufactures.
How do I find the right size?
Japanese denim sizing can differ from European or American standards. We provide detailed measurements for every pair of jeans in our shop.
The best way to check your size is to compare our size chart with a pair of well-fitting jeans or a top you already own. Below you will find our measuring guide, which shows you how we measure our items.
If you're unsure, please contact us and we'll recommend the best size and fit for you.
